Lighting Beams: The Perfect Blend of Wood and Light

Regenerating Architecture with Yoshitaka Uchino

Inspired by the beauty of simple wooden frames and the power of natural light, Yoshitaka Uchino, in collaboration with Mana Muraki, has created a stunning design that brings order and tranquility to a residence. The project, aptly named "Lighting Beams," showcases the perfect blend of wood and light, resulting in a space that not only exudes aesthetic beauty but also demonstrates the remarkable efficacy of regeneration.

To regenerate a house excellently, Uchino's intention was to design a structure that combines the warmth of wood with the transformative power of light. While the existing beams were placed randomly, new beams were evenly added to the frame, creating a sense of order and expressing a transitional beauty that reflects light and shadows. Two of these beams serve as lighting equipment, unifying the wood frame and the light when they encounter each other. The result is a house that not only captivates with its aesthetic appeal but also showcases the stunning efficacy of regeneration.

Bringing natural light into the wood frame and creating the beauty of order were major challenges in this project. By strategically placing narrow windows, focused natural light that changes with the time of day enters the space, creating a dynamic interplay of light and shadows. The two lighting equipment beams, aligned with the existing and new beams, create a conversation between natural and artificial light. The light and the structure merge seamlessly, while the equal proportion of the beams produces a sense of order and beauty.

The space enveloped by wood is designed to be simple yet profound. The beams, columns, and ceilings are painted in the same Osmo dark brown, while the walls are painted in white. Natural light shines on the white walls, and the light from the beams blends harmoniously with the color of the ceiling and beams. Solid oak is used for the flooring, shelves, kitchen, and stairs, creating a sense of naturalness and unity. The texture of the wood and the minimalistic approach to materials and colors contribute to the profound beauty of the space.

The "Lighting Beams" project began in March 2018 and was completed in December of the same year. It required close communication with the client, who desired a renovation that would accommodate their expanding family. Instead of adding rooms in the small garden, Uchino and Muraki created a terrace that serves as an outdoor room. The owner also wanted a strengthened structure, which inspired the design team to incorporate the existing small beams in the wall. A new narrow window was designed under these beams to provide vivid natural light, overcoming the challenge of effectively bringing natural light into the space.

The "Lighting Beams" design by Yoshitaka Uchino and Mana Muraki has received recognition for its excellence. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2018 for its well-designed, practical, and innovative approach. This design not only meets professional and industrial requirements but also contributes to a better world by integrating industry best practices and competent technical characteristics. The "Lighting Beams" project is a testament to the power of wood and light, showcasing the beauty and efficacy of regeneration.
